The Long Tail – online video
April 3rd, 2008 | by geo |The web used to be text for the most part. Yes, there were some photos and animations, but over the past 2 decades it was dominated by text – paper online. Hence, the reason many print media companies supplemented their papers & magazines with online material (which is never going to die!).
We are now in the middle of shift 2, where the web is becoming a video distribution channel. There are dozens of sites, YouTube, Blip, MetaCafe, Hulu, Joost (s/w), Brightcove, and on and on and on…….
Online video has seen rapid success, from average Joe’s posting consumer generated content, to journalists publishing quality content via their own branded channels, to the big name media co’s like News Corp and NBC with sites like Hulu.
Where am I going with this?
I believe in the near term we will see at least one major hit video series online, which was never distributed via traditional cable / satellite.
This will service the long tail, but I bet there’s a minimum 3-5 million users who would tune in for an online hit – at least. It’s coming.
