Still glad I don’t own an iPhone
July 11th, 2008 | by geo |Here’s another good one. Not by me.
Here is “my” experience today:
1. I waited 3 hours in line this morning (and as we know I am not THAT guy). I kinda of expected this so not so bad. Irritating by afterall I made the decision to get it day 1.
2. The $399 phone became $540 because I had added more service (ie:gaveAT&T more money) in the last 12 months so I wasn’t eligible for the”upgrade”. That is not disclosed in any other marketing material, in fact their claim is “twice as fast, half the price”.
3. They disconnected my existing phone and e-mail service and I needed to gohome and activate the i-Phone through i-Tunes. Annoying two-step process to make people go through.
4. The i-Tune servers have crashed due to the number of i-Phones being activated. So while they had the foresight to erect barricades outside the stores and hire a team of security people to deal with the demand today, they did not do anything to enhance the capacity of the servers required for
activation. After all, they got the sale, they can report to thepress how many phones they sold on the first day. Sadly, none of them are operable.
5. I have been back to the AT&T store twice and just now got back from the Apple Store where there are about 2,000 people lined up. They can’t help either.
So, my parents arrive at 3pm today and the plan is for them to call me and tellme where they are, and I won’t have a phone. My fault for risking the newphone on such a critical day I guess, but wow, this is Apple. Who would have expected such major operational issues. Especially since the exact
same thing occurred on Day 1 when the original version launched. First time is a mistake. Second time is incompetence.
