New favorite tool - DropBox
August 5th, 2009 | by geo |
I work between multiple computers, including a few macs and a windows machine. There are also times I’m accessing files and folders from public machines. I keep a lot of what I do in the “cloud” such as email, contacts, and calendar items that I sync with Google, but I’ve not found an easy way to SYNC FILES across multiple computers, until DropBox.
I tried DocSyncer last year, which was suppose to sync local files with Google Doc, but they died last year and the product was junk from day one anyway. I don’t want my files syncing with Google docs because their office suite is very limited and even worse it re-formats the layout of many documents and presentations - not good.
It’s also a BIG PAIN to keep using a USB flash drive to move files around (though I can use my G1 phone…it still sucks.) You have different versions floating around and you alwyas have to remember to update the memory stick - key point!
Now, introducing DropBox - a company that will be purchased very very soon by a major player similar to Rackspace aquisition of JungleDisk.
The product is absolutely awesome, it WORKS, is NEEDED by many, and SIMPLE TO USE. So Simple! AND IT’S FREE! with 2GB of memory , what more do you need?
So, go to GetDropBox.com and download it (Mac, Windows, Linux all supported). It takes 20 seconds and creates a folder on your computer that is always in sync with your web account and on any other computer you install it on.You can access all of your files from any computer and web browser, and if you work from the DropBox folder (meaning save files to that folder on your computer when working on them) you never have to copy or update anything….your files are always up to date and in sync.
Well done! Now, I need this same product for my music library. I don’t understand why I can’t stream my central iTunes music library to any device or computer and hear the songs I want when I want them, from anywhere. WHERE IS THIS PRODUCT?????
Signing off…….

I totally agree - I’ve been using Dropbox since it was released and it’s critical to my daily life. I was surprised when they entered the TC50 contest last year and didn’t win. Man, I’d love it if Google bought these guys, it’d be a perfect add on to Google Apps.
