The new Jackass movie will NOT be released in theatres. Instead, it will be made available at Blockbuster online for FREE streaming. You can later rent it exclusively at Blockbuster, or purchase the DVD at retail shops.

What is the motive here? AVERTISING DOLLARS !!!

Blockbuster paid Paramount $2M upfront for the rights to Jackass, and will share all ad revenue with them. They will publish ads on the Free streaming site.

Why is FaceBook involved ???

For those who don’t know, FaceBook has partnered with Blockbuster (along with other big brand companies) to drive advertising revenue. FaceBook is leveraging its 50 Million users to make advertising social, and Blockbuster is first on deck. When your friend rents JackAss 2.5 from Blockbuster, you’ll be notified via FaceBook. If this has the same effect as the thousands of other mindless FaceBook applications (i.e. millions use them…just because everyone else does…I’m guilty too….) it will spread like wild fire.

The new Blockbuster
This is a brilliant move by Blockbuster as they face heat from Netflix, and on-demand cable and online video distributors. If they can become the “online theatre” for new releases generating ad dollars, while simultaneously using FaceBook to pump it’s brand to targeted users, they are in a for a good ride. Watch.
