FaceBook vs. Google – Let the battle begin

October 24th, 2007 | by geo |

This may seem like a “premature” statement to make, but watch what happens over the next 24-36 months between these two giants. It’s going to be a fight.

Microsoft just invested $240M in FaceBook, valuing FaceBook at $15B. That’s right….$15 Billion.

So, why is there going to a battle with Google?

Well, Google has been slowly building/acquiring the tools to launch it’s own massive social networking service. Google already has the videos, Blog Tools, Photos, Maps, Calendar, Email, Office tools, etc…all wrapped together with sharing tools (SOCIAL NETWORK!) and a MASSIVE USER BASE. They also have the baseline social network from the acquisition of Orkut. They’ve been quite, but their intent is to win over the myspace/facebook users with more compelling tools (+ mobile sharing services first) and add another major revenue stream for their ad business.

FaceBook + 240M investment = major threat to Google’s intentions.
Lastly, if you think this isn’t real consider this. When Facebook recently opened their platform enabling developers to build applications using FaceBook tools, they left one group out. Guess who? Of course, GOOGLE. The’ve blocked Google from the platform..hmmmm coincidence?

Microsoft is of course also very happy, as they will now handle all of the advertising for FaceBook , a business that Microsoft has lost v.s. google and has desperately tried to catch up on…so that’s good for Microsoft.
