Ahmadinejad visit to Columbia University…mission accomplished?

I have a very limited understanding of politics, and don’t usually feel comfortable commenting on them. I try to see things in their objective format as best I can, and not get too hung up on all of the intricacies. That said, I feel like expressing my current view on Ahmadinejad’s trip to Columbia University.

I don’t understand why he made the speech.

I view the whole thing personally as a publicity stunt - all eyeballs on Iran? Credit to Ahmadinejad on leveraging the media if this was ultimately his goal. I guess the U.S. looks good in terms of inviting all world leaders with open arms, but again I just don’t get the overall positive that came out of it. Granted, he was invited by the President of the University, so at the end of the day he simply accepted the invitation. Yet, all that has come out of it is a debate about whether the guy should be allowed to step foot on U.S. soil…and rising tensions. Especially considering the context of his talk….he was insulted, perhaps made some insults as well, and made some claims that are EXTREMELY questionable/conflictive to many.
To sum it up, it feels that he’s “mocking” the U.S. in our face. But further, he was invited and given an open platform to do so.

Someone please shed some light on this. What good came out of it and how could it be qualified even as an “educational” experience?
